#4

Pop Art
This design is quite different from all my previous designs. It involves sculptural pieces, maybe made from card or slightly harder material, mounted at the top of a wall close to the ceiling. Where the word 'pow' is shown in my sketch, would be where the name of the area would be, e.g dance, theatre, maths, etc. This would be in a comic style and would give a pop art feel throughout the building. Arrows would show the direction of where students and visitors would go to get to their destination.

#3

Graphic/Fine Art
This design involves continuous images on walls leading onto the ceiling and floor. In this specific design, there would be a detailed painting of a ribbon on the wall leading Brit students and visitors to their destination. The painting may begin in the reception with a detailed painting of a dancer holding the ribbon acting as a trail towards the dance studio for example.

#2

Words forming words
This design is similar to the previous design font wise. The font would be plain, simple and clear to read. However, instead of block colours, the signs showing the name of the area or simple arrows would be formed from words written in a simple font in various sizes. From a distance, the signs would appear as if they have been painted one colour but when closely observed, each word would seem clearly visible; e.g the sign 'VAD' could be formed from the words visual arts and design or art related words or an arrow '-->' could be formed from the words the arrow is leading to such as the reception, visual arts and design department, foyer, etc. As the words forming the arrows would not be visible from a distance, there would have to be a colour code for certain areas of the building, e.g art strand could have the colour orange, theatre could have green, the reception could have yellow and the foyer could have blue, etc.

#1

The 3D look
In this design, all the signs would be 3D. Each letter of the word would be an individual block. This size of each word would be big enough to be seen from a far distance making it easier for members of the public to find their way around the building. As way finding is so important, the signs would be hung at the top of the wall close to the ceiling rather than at the bottom or on the floor to ensure all signs are visible during break times or lunch times when the area is busy and over crowded. A clear and simple font would be used for easy navigation.

Questionnaire

This questionnaire is aimed at all Brit school students.

I designed a questionnaire to help me decide what I need to incorporate into our new building and to confine my ideas into things not only I am interested in, but what other members of the school are interested in too. I feel it is important to include preferences of Brit School students in my designs as it will be the Brit School students who will be engaging with the new building. I produced questions I feel are most relevant and would help develop ideas for my final design.

During my lunch break, I asked Brit school students from all year groups each question from my questionnaire. The results are shown below.

1.  What type of mood do you think the foyer has?
fun - exciting - diverse - joyful - entertaining - busy - over crowded - manic - active - loud - intimidating - mad - merry

2.  What type of mood would you like to create in the foyer?
calmer - relaxing - peaceful - controlled - happy - bright

3.  What colours do you feel would suit the mood you would like to create?
green orange - pink - orange green white - white black - red purple green - red orange grey - yellow blue

4.  Natural, calm, relaxing OR urban, loud, 'in your face'?
calm - natural and calm - loud but not too loud - relaxing - a calm urban

5.  Would you prefer to have a graphic or fine art feel in the foyer?
fine art but not completely paint and drawings - graphics - graphics maybe like graffiti - detailed fine art - a bit of both

6.  Do you feel strands have been seperated at the BRIT school and would you prefer if there was a division between each strand or a connection?
no, strands have not been seperated but I would prefer if all strands linked in some way - I think its fine the way it is - some strands have a connection and other strands are left out - yes, all strands should have a connection
